Does Your Child Measure Up?
It makes a difference. There is now a minimum height before any child is allowed to sit in a car without a car seat. From September 2006 everyone had better make sure they have a car seat or booster seat, to suit their child or children. Take care to check out the requirements before you get a fine or you have an accident and hurt your child because you haven't bothered! Sound Harsh? Good, put your childs welbeing before your pocket. make them as safe as you possibly can.
The New Law:
IS YOUR CHILD-SEAT APPROPRIATE? |
|
From September 8th 2006 the law has changed regarding carseats and their use. The basic facts you need to be aware of follow:
-
All Passengers Over 14 Years Of Age Must wear A Seat Belt Whether They Are In The Back OR Front Seat & It Is There Own Responsibility To Make Sure They Wear The Seat Belt, NOT The Driver.
-
Children That Are 12 or 13 Years Of Age That Are Over 1.35 Meters Tall, Must Wear A Seat Belt, Whether They Sit In The Back Or Front & It Is The Drivers Responsibility To Ensure They Wear The Seat Belt.
-
Children Aged 3 And Above Until They Either Reach 1.35 Meters In Height Or Their 12th Birthday, Must Use The Correct Child Restraint, Which Means A Seat That Is Specifically Designed For The Size/Age Of The Child.
There Are Three Exceptions To This Which Follow:
- The Child Is In A Taxi Or Private Hir Vehicle
- The Child IS Required To Go On A Short Journey Which Is Necessary
- If There Are Two Child Restraints Occupied And A Third Cannot Be Fitted.
The reasons for using a child seat or booster seat are so that if there is an accident then the seat belt will not only save your childs life, the position of the belt accross the childs body is correct. If you do not use a child seat or booster seat and you have an accident, then because the seat belt is up around the childs neck the risk of serious injury by the seat belt is high, so your child may survive the accident, but could be paralysed due to the neck injury he/she sustained because the seat belt was not correctly positioned, because you never thought it would happen to you!
